THE PRESIDENT IS PRESENTED WITH THE LETTERS OF CREDENCE BY THE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF SOUTH AFRICA AND THE AMBASSADOR OF URUGUAY
H.E. Dr. Edward Fenech Adami, President of Malta, was presented with the letters of credence by H.E. Mr. Lenin Magigwane Shope, High Commissioner of South Africa and H.E. Mr. Carlos Alejandro Barros, Ambassador of Uruguay.
The ceremony took place in the Ambassador’s Room at The Palace, Valletta. Later in the day, the President and Mrs. Fenech Adami will host the newly accredited Ambassadors to an official luncheon at San Anton.

H.E. Mr Lenin Magigwane Shope was born in March 1962 in Johannesburg, Gauteng. Since his early childhood, Mr. Shope was in exile and completed his primary and secondary education in the former Czechoslovakia and Zambia, respectively.
From 1982 to 1987 he was enrolled at the José Antonio Echeverr’a Senior Polytechnic Institute in Havana, where he studied the analysis and design of Automated Management Systems.
In 1989 he worked in Lusaka, Zambia for the ANC Department of Education from 1989 as head of its Technical Unit, until his return to South Africa in 1991, when he took up work as an estate agent. In 1992 he joined the South African Airways as an Analyst Programmer, and from 1993 to 1995 worked for Engun Petroleum Ltd in the same capacity.

The High Commissioner joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in October 1995, and from May 1996 served as First Secretary and then Counsellor at the South African Embassy in Havana. From November 1999, he acted as Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy until his return to South Africa in May 2000, when he was appointed Director: Latin America. On 4 September 2002 he was accredited as South Africa’s Ambassador to Republic of Cuba and on 5 March 2003 as non-resident Ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
The High Commissioner is married and has three children.

H.E. Mr. Carlos Alejandro Barros was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1950. He studied at the ‘Universita della Republica Orientale’ in Uruguay from where he graduated in International Affairs at the Faculty of Economical and Administrative Science obtained the title of University Consul. He also conducted several studies in various institutions including the Diplomatic Academy of Uruguay and the Diplomatic School of Spain.

In his diplomatic career he held various high-ranking positions which include that of Ambassador for Uruguay in Italy and Cuba. He was also Ambassador-Designate in Algeria and Malta, Uruguay’s Permanent Repersentative for FAO and Consul for Uruguay in San Paolo and Switzerland.
He is married and has three children.
