The President of Malta

President George Vella’s engagements in relation to the Arraiolos Malta Meeting continued this morning as he received President Katerina Sakellaropoulou of Greece.

The two Presidents went through the main highlights of the issues that were discussed during the Arraiolos Plenary meetings and focused in particular on migration in the Mediterranean. Both emphasised the need for a balance to be struck between solidarity and responsibility. The Greek President referred to tragic drownings that had taken place the day before off the islands of Lesbos and Kythira.

Reference was also made to the latest developments concerning borders in the Eastern Mediterranean with President Vella stating that international law is the only viable means to resolve such disputes. Prevailing instability in Libya was also discussed in the context of curbing irregular migration originating in sub-Saharan Africa, transiting through the Sahel with final points of departures at sea from the Libyan coast.

Other bilateral meetings with visiting heads of state are being held during the course of the day, during which President Vella will be accompanied by Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Owen Bonnici.
