PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

The Office of the President, in close collaboration with the British High Commission, will be holding an ‘Anglo-Maltese Cultural Symposium’ on Wednesday 13th September 2023, at Sant’Anton Palace from 9am till 4pm.

This third symposium from the Presidency Culture Symposia series is entitled ‘Evoking Memories, Shaping Futures’ and aims to explore the political, cultural, and institutional relationship between Malta and the UK. The morning session of the symposium will focus on the diplomatic relations and the legacy and influence of British music, fashion, and cuisine in Malta. The afternoon session will be a discussion forum with Maltese young leaders about how the themes of youth and the environment should be taken forward by the Commonwealth.

The symposium will feature a lineup of dignitaries from Malta, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. President George Vella will attend and address the Symposium.

An interesting lineup of speakers and researchers will cover various aspects of the historical and cultural ties between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Malta. Ms Simone Azzopardi from the Department of History at the University of Malta shall introduce proceedings with a general introduction to the historic relations between the two countries. The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Baroness Patricia Scotland, will share her views on youth, environment, climate, and inclusion in a recorded message.
