Official talks were held between President George Vella and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier at San Anton Palace.
President Steinmeier referred to the Arraiolos Heads of State meeting, hosted by President Vella, and stated that it was a very timely occasion given the turbulent events in Europe. The two presidents discussed at length developments in the Western Balkans from the perspective of enlargement of the European Union. It is important, both agreed, that candidate countries and their populations are given clear signals of encouragement and motivation.
A detailed exchange of views took place on the latest scenario in Ukraine, particularly following the illegal annexations by Russia. The two presidents also discussed developments in the Mediterranean, particularly those in Libya.
An overview of German investment in Malta along the decades was also up for discussion, with President Vella stating that it had played an instrumental role in the growth and diversification of the economy.
The two presidents had met on previous occasions, with the latest one being in Berlin during a visit to Germany by President George Vella in September 2021.
