The President of Malta George Vella listened to the experiences of the mayors of 12 local councils forming part of the Kunsill Reġjonali Tramuntana during a meeting held on Thursday at Sant’ Anton Palace.
In what was the second in a series of meetings that the President is having with the mayors of the localities in Malta and Gozo, the President explained how the aim for these meetings is to make changes in ideas and suggestions in relation to existing challenges. Additionally, the President said that, “Local councils have an instrumental role to play in the plan for national unity and I encourage them to play their part in this initiative.”
President George Vella recalled how the Foundation for National Unity will be set up with the aim of addressing, in a tangible way — including listening to the mayors and councillors themselves, amongst other things — what needs to be done to reduce the divisions between us.
From his end, Mr Mario Fava, President of the Local Councils’ Association, expressed the appreciation of the association for such meetings, as in his words, “the Presidency is giving importance to the existing problems in localities and listens to local councils which can be pioneers in the efforts for national unity”.
Mr Anton Mifsud, President of the Kunsill Reġjonali Tramuntana, also thanked the President for such an initiative through which the mayors are able to express their thoughts and discuss how they can convey the message of national unity moving forward.
