The President of Malta, George Vella, discussed several issues of international and regional importance with Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, this afternoon, during a meeting held at Sant’Anton Palace.
Discussions on the Mediterranean region focussed primarily on the war between Israel and Hamas, the situation in Libya, and Türkiye’s role in addressing irregular migration in the Eastern Mediterranean. Minister Fidan gave President Vella an overview of Türkiye’s assessment of the status of relations with the European Union and developments concerning the possible solution of the Cyprus question.
Discussions also focused on the wide-ranging effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine and recalled Türkiye’s role in resolving the Black Sea Grain blockade in 2023.
Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg accompanied the President during the meeting and contributed to the exchanges.
