President of Malta George Vella received Luca Beccari, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Telecommunications of the Republic of San Marino, on a courtesy call at Sant’Anton Palace.
At the outset, President Vella referred to the excellent relations and active exchanges between the two countries. He welcomed the continued interest shown by San Marino in strengthening and deepening its relations with Malta. The President mentioned the Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations signed during the Minister’s ongoing visit to Malta. Relations with the European Union were also discussed, with President Vella underlining Malta’s support to the negotiations on the Association Agreement between the EU and the Republic of San Marino. Such an agreement would benefit both the EU and the Republic of San Marino in several areas, especially the social and economic areas.
On his part, Minister Beccari expressed satisfaction at the solid legal framework with Malta, adding that San Marino is interested in embarking on joint projects as a next step. He gave a detailed explanation of the present state of negotiations on the Association Agreement and the reforms that have been implemented in this regard. He conveyed appreciation for the support extended by Malta along this path of closer relations with the EU, and identified public administration and e-government as possible areas of tangible cooperation and sharing of expertise by Maltese authorities.
The general global situation was discussed, with particular focus on the war in Ukraine and its wide-ranging consequences.
