President Vella inaugurates an exhibition of 33 sculptures in aid of the MCCF

PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

President George Vella launched ‘Sculptura’, a curated exhibition featuring a remarkable collection of 33 pieces of sculpture donated by 32 artists in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.

Launching the exhibition at Antoine De Paule Hall at Sant’Anton Palace, President Vella thanked all artists and Art4MCCF for this second thematic project aimed at raising funds for those in need while promoting the achievements of Malta’s artistic community.

The exhibition features a variety of stand-alone sculptures, in-the-round sculptures, and hanging sculptures, more commonly known as reliefs. It encompasses a wide range of genres, from figurative to abstract, ephemeral, and even incorporating elements like giant popcorn, balloons, busts, masks, and bones. The subjects explored in the artworks vary from religious and mythological themes to phobias and contemporary issues. The invited artists include well-established figures in the Maltese art scene as well as promising up-and-coming talents.

Mr Lawrence Pavia, chairperson of the organising committee, said that after the successful curated exhibition ‘But I See Beauty’ late last year, Art4MCCF has decided to organise this exhibition focusing on sculpture, which has served as a means of communication, commemoration, and devotion since ancient times.

Ms Melanie Erixon, curator of the exhibition, said each artwork tells its own unique story while utilising various materials such as ceramics, metal, clay, fabric, globigerina limestone, resin, paper, brass, gold plating, and 3D printing. One artwork is interactive, allowing the potential owner to alter parts of the sculpture and concept.

The public may visit the exhibition on Saturdays (3, 10, and 17 June) and Sundays (4, 11, and 18 June) between 0900–1200 hours and 1700–2000 hours.

The exhibition is supported by APS Bank, Antes Insurance Brokers, M. Demajo Group, and GasanMamo Insurance.

Art4MCCF is a dedicated group of individuals committed to voluntarily supporting the Malta Community Chest Fund through the promotion and organization of artistic initiatives. By showcasing the work of local artists, Art4MCCF aims to raise funds and create awareness for the pressing needs of the foundation.
