This afternoon, President George Vella received Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, at the Presidential Palace in Valletta.
Exchanges focused on the situation concerning irregular migration in the Mediterranean with President von der Leyen giving an overview of the European Commission’s plans to address the matter with stakeholders in the coming months. President Vella referred to Malta’s consistent call for solidarity with frontline countries and a holistic solution as part of a comprehensive partnership.
Developments in North African countries were also discussed in light of the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood policy. Reference was also made to the latest scenario related to the Western Balkans and enlargement of the EU.
The Presidents discussed the wide-ranging global impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine with particular reference to the energy crisis and the Black Sea grain deal.
President von der Leyen is in Malta to participate in the MED9 Summit held during the course of the day.
