Restoration works on one of the Grand Master’s Palace corridors are at an advanced stage

Restoration works in one of the corridors on the Piano Nobile at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta are at an advanced stage. The removal of the first section of scaffolding in this corridor has enabled a first glimpse of the extensively restored soffits and walls.

This was announced during a visit to the Palace by President of Malta, George Vella during which he was given an update on the works done so far.

In a few words during the visit, President George Vella expressed satisfaction for the work being done and thanked the Heritage Malta staff for the dedication and care in their work to preserve this cultural heritage.

According to information provided by Heritage Malta, the restoration of the corridors is part of the first phase of this ambitious project which when completed will offer visitors a different experience of the palace to the one enjoyed in the past. In total, the project is estimated to cost around €28 million. The initial phase is cofinanced by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund for the sum of €10 million, while the subsequent phase, at a cost of around €18 million, will be financed by the Maltese Government. The initial phase is expected to be completed by 2022 while the entire project should be ready by 2025.

The visit was also made in the presence of the Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, José Herrera; Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi; the Chairman of Heritage Malta, Anthony Scicluna, the Executive Director of Heritage Malta, Mario Cutajar; and the Chief Executive of Heritage Malta, Noel Zammit.
