Telecon with President Xi Jinping

PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

President George Vella held a telephone conversation with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping. The exchange was held on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malta.

The two presidents agreed that relations are exemplary and based on mutual respect and dialogue. They welcomed the tangible results and extensive cooperation that materialised along these five decades, observing further that relations are based on a sound juridical framework that covers health and medicine, energy, water, education, culture and youth.

This cooperation was extended over the past months to also include measures aimed at countering the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, through the donation of protective gear.

The presidents reiterated their shared commitment to take relations to the next level, even on the international level, through mutual multilateral support, especially with regards to the United Nations, as well as through the strengthened relations between China and the European Union.

Regional developments such as those in the Mediterranean and the Middle East were raised during the exchanges, together with the commitments that Malta and China have made to address climate change.

President Xi Jinping extended an invitation to President Vella for a visit to China during the course of the year.

President Vella welcomed the invitation, stating that such a visit would provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate the landmark anniversary of relations between the two countries.
