The Ambassador of Algeria, Abdelkarim Touharia, presented his letters of credence to President George Vella at the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta.
In welcoming the ambassador, President Vella recalled that Malta and Algeria have a historical affinity in view of their geographical proximity and historical similarities. He added that over the years, exchanges between the two communities left a mark on each other’s identity, language, and customs. He urged the ambassador to visit Malta as often as possible to identify and expand upon existing potential for cooperation in trade, energy, tertiary education, and health.
Ambassador Touharia outlined his plans to work on several avenues of cooperation and identified fisheries, tourism, and start-ups among his priorities.
The discussion also included the role that Malta has traditionally played in the European Union to underline the importance of stability and security in North Africa and neighbouring countries in the Sahel region.
