On Wednesday, President of Malta George Vella, together with Mrs Vella, joined the residents of the Komunità Santa Marija Rehabilitation Centre, managed by Aġenzija Sedqa in Ħal-Farruġ, for dinner. The visit marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The President was greeted and shown around the new section of the Centre by Alfred Grixti, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS); Joe Gerada, FSWS Chairman; Charles Scerri, Sedqa Operations Director; and Anna Maria Vella, Clinical Chairperson of the Substance Misuse Outpatient Unit. He was introduced to the residents, as well as to Aġenzija Sedqa staff, managers, and leaders.
The President reminded residents that while this centre offers management and professionals who offer them the support they need in their cirmustances, ultimately it is totally up to them to succeed.
“Deciding that you need help is the most important thing. You are people like others who, unfortunately, encoutered certain circumstances that pushed you towards certain measures. I was pleased to talk with some of you and to see the determination of those who have decided to stop their addiction. Help is there for those who want it, but it depends on you.”
During the dinner, a man who left the rehabilitation centre almost two years ago and the parents of a young man who is currently a resident shared their experience with those present.
