President George Vella received the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, on a courtesy call this morning at the Presidential Palace in Valletta.
At the outset, President Vella referred to the visit to Malta by His Holiness Pope Francis stating that this had left an indelible memory with the people of Malta and Gozo.
The two interlocutors discussed the war in Ukraine at great length, entering into particular detail on the devastating humanitarian consequences of Russia’s invasion. Both agreed that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represents a direct threat to the multilateral system.
The effects of the war on the global energy and food security scenario were also raised.
The exchanges also centred around other issues of regional and international importance ranging from migration in the Mediterranean to the preservation of international norms and standards that govern relations between states.
