The President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono visited the Central Archive at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Rabat, Malta, at the invitation of Mr Charles Farrugia, the National Archivist.

During this visit, the President met with the employees and volunteers, and also with the management who explained the various sections and their work.

The management emphasised the urgency of identifying a site to build the national archives according to the best standards in the field of archiving in order to safeguard the documents compiling the history and collective memory of the people of Malta.

The President understood the challenges faced by the administration of the National Archives in its work, and agreed on the need for a suitable and adequate site to accommodate the increasing space required each year for new documents.

She also stressed the need for the documents not to remain in different sites but to be gathered in one place.
