On Friday evening, a ceremony was held at Verdala Castle to celebrate the Europa Nostra 2026 Heritage Champions Award conferred upon Din l-Art Ħelwa.
This recognition was awarded by the European Commission and Europa Nostra; a European federation dedicated to the protection of historical sites, monuments, and landscapes across Europe.
Din l-Art Ħelwa was recognized for over 60 years of work dedicated to safeguarding the country’s architectural and natural heritage, encompassing restoration projects as well as initiatives focused on education, promotion, and public engagement.
During the event, attended by Europa Nostra officials, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, commended the work of Din l-Art Ħelwa. She highlighted the significant role the voluntary organization has played since its founding in 1965 by Judge Maurice Caruana Curran, shortly after the country gained its independence.
Beyond the projects spearheaded by Din l-Art Ħelwa, Her Excellency acknowledged the fact that the organization has fostered a culture that values historical heritage, strengthened civic awareness regarding that heritage, and is raising awareness among younger generations about the responsibility we bear towards the future generations.
