President George Vella’s Official Visit to Latvia continues

PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

On the second day of the Official Visit to Latvia, President of Malta George Vella, accompanied by Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, had a meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs. They held a very detailed discussion on the security situation in the Mediterranean and the latest developments in Southern partners. The ongoing process leading to the accession to the European Union of Western Balkan countries was also discussed at length. Furthermore, the migration situation in both Malta and Latvia was elaborated upon.

The engagements of President Vella and the Maltese delegation in Riga continued with a visit to the company TILDE which specialises in language technology based on artificial intelligence. Through a presentation, President Vella was explained how this technology is being applied in a practical way, as well as the cooperation with Maltese public entities, including the University of Malta, MITA, and the Office of the State Advocate.

The President and Mrs Vella, accompanied by the Maltese delegation, also visited the National Library of Latvia. The President presented a number of books about Malta: among others about the festa, Maltese literature, history, Valletta, and a book in Maltese.

At the National Library of Latvia, Mrs Miriam Vella visited the Children’s Library equipped to encourage children to discover the beauty of reading from an early age.
