The tapestries of the Grand Master’s Palace have returned to the palace following a conservation project in Belgium that took almost two years to complete. The project formed part of the extensive restoration works currently being carried out at the palace by Heritage Malta.
The inauguration of the restored tapestries was held under the patronage of the President of Malta, in the presence of Dr Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, Minister for the Arts, Culture and the National Heritage.
In her address during the inauguration, the President of Malta described the tapestries as a unique historical and artistic treasure. She said that the occasion should serve to raise greater awareness of the importance of preserving Malta’s cultural heritage.
President Myriam Spiteri Debono emphasised that cultural heritage should continue to be a source of education, inspiration and unity, while serving as a bridge between generations and encouraging more people, particularly young people, to appreciate the historical and artistic wealth of our country.
The President also acknowledged the efforts undertaken to ensure that these priceless works of art can continue to be enjoyed by present and future generations. She expressed her appreciation to Heritage Malta, its leadership, all the experts involved, and the conservators for their commitment, dedication and professionalism.
