Courtesy call by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey

President Myriam Spiteri Debono received a courtesy visit from Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana.

President Spiteri Debono and the Ghanaian Foreign Minister discussed the ongoing bilateral cooperation between Malta and Ghana in various sectors. Both sides emphasized on the importance of trade and foreign direct investment as a means to strengthen ties between the two countries, noting the significant presence of Maltese companies already operating in Ghana. Minister Ayorkor Botchwey expressed her appreciation and highlighted the significance of the opening of the High Commission in Ghana, the first Maltese diplomatic mission in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Both sides acknowledged the importance of bolstering the Commonwealth as a platform for its member states on the international stage, particularly on issues relating to climate change, rule of law and democracy, and small islands and developing states. In this regard, President Spiteri Debono underscored the potential of the Commonwealth as a multilateral organisation, which as a body, can contribute a strong united voice on the international stage.
