Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, attended the launch of the ‘Port Cultural Region 2026’ programme; a cultural programme promoting arts, culture and sports initiatives in the localities around the Grand Harbour.
In a speech during the official ceremony, the President of Malta highlighted the importance of communities as the beating heart of our regions, and the work of Local Councils, organisations and individuals to preserve and strengthen culture and aspects of Maltese society.
She also spoke on the historical importance of the Port Region, which over the years has gone through historic events, particularly the Second World War, which gave rise to the Region being given attention, particularly so that the area can be regenerated economically, culturally and socially.
At the end of her speech, the President described the Local Councils as the first representation of the people of the localities, and mentioned that all of them together are a direct representation of the entire Maltese and Gozitan people.
The President said that therefore every activity in our localities should be a means of uniting, and in order to unite, it must include and engage everyone, because the success that is achieved must belong to, and be the result of the collective work of everyone.
