The IĠM Awards ceremony was held at the Verdala Castle. The event was organised by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) under the patronage of the President of Malta, during which 21 awards were given to journalists working in different fields of journalism.
Among these honours, H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono recognised Ray Bugeja, one of the founders of The Malta Independent, with the Gold Award for his contribution to journalism in Malta.
In her speech, President Spiteri Debono recognised the work of the IĠM in favour of journalism and journalists in Malta, and highlighted the duties of the Institute, especially now that it has been officially recognised as a union.
The President also reminded journalists of their responsibility to inform the public clearly and correctly, and stressed the crucial importance of being objective. At the same time, the President also acknowledged their commitment to truth, correctness and civic sense which makes them an important part of our country’s democratic project.
The Maltese Institute of Journalists announced that the payment of journalists’ submissions for these honours will go towards the work of Palestinian journalists, especially those operating in Gaza.
