The President of Malta, Her Excellency Dr Myriam Spiteri Debono, yesterday paid an official visit to the National Audit Office (NAO). The delegation was welcomed by the Auditor General, Mr Charles Deguara, and by the Deputy Auditor General, Mr Noel Camilleri.
In a meeting with the top officials of the NAO, Her Excellency was given a detailed explanation of the Office’s work and the different types of audits carried out by the Office in line with its constitutional mandate.
In her speech on this occasion, the President of Malta said that the National Audit Office is part of the democratic format of our country and contributes to the rule of law.
The President also emphasised that the scrutiny carried out by this Office strengthens accountability and governance, and should be carried out in an objective, impartial manner and without being tainted by external influences.
The Auditor General, while thanking Her Excellency for finding the time to make his first visit to this Office, said that the Office’s management and all its staff are actively committed to continue providing the best auditing service possible so that good governance across the public sector continues to be enhanced, ultimately in the best interest of all citizens. Mr Deguara paid tribute to the total commitment of all NAO’s employees – a united team of highly dedicated, reliable and professional employees that undoubtedly constitute the Office’s most valuable resource.
Her Excellency, the President of Malta, also took the opportunity to address all NAO staff and convey her appreciation for their work. On this occasion, Her Excellency took the opportunity to present mementos to those NAO employees who are approaching retirement in the near future.
At the end of the visit, the Auditor General presented the President with a donation in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund, collected from activities organised for the employees, and their donations.
Her Excellency was accompanied by Mrs Moira Attard, Secretary to the Presidency, Mr Reuben Sciberras, Head of Secretariat and by Her Aide-de-Camp Maj. Richard Vassallo.
